Conference Topics:

Advocacy: Taking Charge & Influencing Change
This session will focus on how to become involved in advocating for individuals with brain injury. Tips on how to get involved at the local and state level will be discussed. Additionally, information will be presented on how to start support groups in your community.

Family Dynamics After Brain Injury
The focus of this session will be on family dynamics and the changing roles of family members following a loved one's brain injury. Children as caregivers, parents as caregivers and spouses as caregivers will each be examined in depth.

Communication Issues: Tips & Tricks
This session will focus on the breakdown of the communication process following traumatic brain injury. Ideas for better communication style within the family and with others will be addressed.

The A B C's of Behavioral Management
This session will focus on antecedents, behavior and consequences involved in behavioral management. Techniques for understanding and controlling inappropriate behaviors following brain injury will be discussed.

Managing Medications With Your Personal Physician
This session will focus on tips for talking to your family physician regarding medication management following brain injury. A brief overview of current medications used in the management of brain injury and their pros and cons will be discussed.

STRESS: How to Combat Caregiver Burnout
The focus of this session will be on tips to combat caregiver stress and burnout. Suggestions for managing a loved one' needs while taking time for yourself will be discussed.

Preparing for the Future: Medical & Financial Issues
Preparing for the future with an individual with brain injury will be the focus of this session. Estate planning and other financial issues will be addressed as well as the long-term medical management of caring for a person with a brain injury.
